Colorado Academic Standards Review and Revision Details

Colorado Academic Standards: All Students, All Standards

The Colorado Academic Standards describe what students should know and be able to do to prepare them to be active citizens and successful in higher education and/or the workforce. A group of content area standards undergoes a review and revision process every two years. This page describes details of the current revision cycle, including meeting dates, committee rosters, and released materials. To read the current standards, or to learn more about the standards revision process in general, see these relevant pages.

The Current Revision Cycle: 2026, Group 3

Standards Revision Group 3 for comprehensive health; mathematics; reading, writing & communicating; and science

Four content areas — comprehensive health; mathematics; reading, writing & communicating; and science — are in the "Group 3" revision cycle. The expected process for review follows this timeline:

  • December 2024: The State Board of Education determines if content area standards need revision.
  • January and February 2025: Coloradoans can apply for standards revision committee membership.
  • March 2025: The committees are selected, announced, and organized.
  • Spring/Summer 2025: Standards revision committees meet to develop recommendations for revision.
  • Fall 2025: The committees' recommendations are presented to the State Board of Education and stakeholders for feedback.
  • Fall 2025: Standards revision committees consider feedback and finalize recommendations.
  • Winter/Spring 2026: Final recommendations are presented to the State Board of Education for approval.

Youth Involvement in Standards: By statute, CDE is required to involve students in the review and revision of the Colorado Academic Standards. For the Group 3 revisions, CDE Commissioner Susana Córdova has selected Sarah Elmore of Campo High School (Campo School District RE-6) to be the Colorado Youth Advisor to the Academic Standards Review and Regional Educator Meetings for 2025-26.

At the December 11, 2024 meeting of the State Board of Education, the board voted to adopt the 2018 revision of the Comprehensive Health standards with no revisions. Barring any further action by the board or the legislature, these standards will remain in effect until the 2032 revision cycle.

At the December 11, 2024 meeting of the State Board of Education, the board voted to adopt the 2018 revision of the Reading, Writing and Communicating standards with no revisions. Barring any further action by the board or the legislature, these standards will remain in effect until the 2032 revision cycle.

Science

At their December 2024 meeting, the State Board of Education directed CDE staff to evaluate the current K-12 science standards and make recommendations to strengthen the standards around climate science. Because this process will not call for a review and revision committee, it is expected to take less time than the revisions for high school mathematics. The expected timeline is as follows:

  • Winter 2025: Research and development of draft recommendations
  • April 2025: Preliminary recommendations presented to State Board of Education
  • April 2025: Preliminary recommendations posted for public feedback
  • May 2025: Recommendations are revised based on feedback
  • June 2025: Final recommendations presented to the board for approval
