Learner Objectives

Participants will:

  • Increase your understanding of how to identify and teach executive functioning skills and accommodate executive functioning weaknesses
  • Describe the evidence we have that teaching these skills works well for elementary-aged students
  • Learn how to teach specific flexibility and planning skills using scripts or vocabulary and other tools 

 

Study Questions

  1.  After Marcus waits in a long lunch line, he finds out they they ran out of what he planned to buy.  Marcus gets mad because his favorite food is gone and refuses to make another choice. His teacher can help Marcus by:
    1. Asking him if he needs help figuring out a "plan B"
    2. Telling him he is being "inflexible"
    3. Saying that this eating lunch is a "no choice" situation
  2. GWPDC Script stands for:
    1. Go-We-Play-Do-Check
    2. Goal-Why-Play-Do-Check
    3. Get-Who-Plan-Don't-Cheat
  3. When a child gets upset over something and says it's a "big deal", the teacher should:
    1. tell them that it's "not a big deal", it's really a "little deal"
    2. ask them how we can change a "big deal" into a "little deal"
    3. remind them that things could always be worse, to they will realize it's not so bad
  4. Maria's mother limits computer time to one hour a day on weekdays.  Maria is motivated to get her homework done so that she can user hour on the computer.  This system works well until Maria's hour is up and she has to get off the computer.  When Maria's mother tells her to turn off the computer, she usually refuses and often has a temper tantrum.  What should you suggest that Maria's mother do?
    1. Turn off the computer and threaten to take away computer time tomorrow
    2. Work together with Maria to create a plan for turning the computer off without an argument, and let Maria help pick how and when she will be reminded to turn off the computer
    3. Agree to let Maria have 10 more minutes on the computer if she promises to stop crying
