In this webinar, participants will learn about legal and best practice considerations for completing comprehensive Autism assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. School-based special education team members will learn about Autism assessment modification strategies, remote assessment options, alternative assessment methods, and how to consider the impacts of the pandemic on the data collected. There will also be an emphasis on equitable practices and promoting culturally and responsive Autism assessment strategies. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions following the webinar.

Learner Objectives: 

After completing this webinar, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain why it’s important to identify autism symptoms in early childhood and not adopt a “wait and see” approach. 
  2. Identify several early emerging symptoms of ASD in young boys and girls across three different domains of functioning (social, communication, flexibility).
  3. Explain how to differentiate between ASD, a global developmental delay (or intellectual disability), and a speech-language impairment in young children.

About the Presenter

Susan Hepburn is a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University and a licensed clinical psychologist. She is actively engaged in teaching at the university and consulting in schools on educational identification and intervention for students with autism spectrum disorders. She is collaborating with community partners to establish a clinic on the CSU campus which will provide evaluations, consultation, and direct support to persons with ASD and their families
