2025 Colorado Teacher of the Year Janet Damon named as finalist for National Teacher of the Year award

DENVER -- The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) today announced its finalists for the 2025 National Teacher of the Year award. One of those four finalists is Colorado’s 2025 Teacher of the Year Janet Damon. Damon is a history teacher at DELTA High School in Denver Public Schools and has been an educator for over 25 years.

Colorado State Board of Education Chair Rebecca McClellan said: “Janet Damon represents the very best of Colorado’s educators, and we are thrilled she’s a finalist for National Teacher of the Year. Her passion for empowering students and promoting equity is inspiring, and we are so proud to see her represent Colorado on the national stage.”

Education Commissioner Susana Córdova said: “Janet Damon’s dedication to her students and her community is truly impressive. Being named a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year award highlights the meaningful impact she has had as an educator. We’re proud to see her hard work and commitment recognized at this level."

As a finalist, Damon will travel to Washington, D.C. in February to interview with the National Teacher of the Year Selection Committee.

Teaching is about empowering others, and I’m excited to continue sharing the incredible work happening in our classrooms."

She responds to each student’s unique needs with creativity, building excitement for learning and inspiring every student she touches. Her impact is transformative, shaping the future one student at a time.”

Jared Polis said: “In Colorado, we strive to give every student the high-quality education needed to succeed, which would not be possible without hardworking, passionate, and dedicated educators like Janet Damon. This well-deserved recognition highlights the important role that educators play in creating lifelong learners and preparing students to thrive both in the classroom and in our workforce. I’m thrilled that Janet will be representing Colorado on this prestigious national stage and we are rooting for her every step of the way.”

As Colorado’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, Damon was entered into the national competition as the state’s nominee in November. The CCSSO National Teacher of the Year selection committee is made up of representatives from 14 education organizations and selected Damon as one of the top four candidates out of 56 educators.

CCSSO will announce the 2025 National Teacher of the Year in the spring. If selected as the 2025 National Teacher of the Year, Damon would serve as the nation’s ambassador for education and represent the voices and perspectives of all teachers and students. Colorado’s last National Teacher of the Year finalist was Roaring Fork School District educator Autumn Rivera in 2022.

Biography for Janet Damon

Janet Damon is a proud Denver Public Schools graduate and has spent her career with the districts in a variety of roles, including as a history teacher, literacy interventionist, library specialist and trainer, and a K-12 school librarian. She currently serves as a history teacher at DELTA High School and has been an educator for more than 25 years.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Damon co-founded Afros and Books, a book club focused on literacy and empowerment that promotes equal access to books in underserved communities. She also organizes outdoor activities for families, such as hiking, kayaking, archery, yoga, fly fishing, and birding, while providing more than 1,000 new books to youth for summer reading.

Damon received the 2024 Extraordinary Teacher Award from Suntec Concrete, the 2023 African Americans Who are Making a Difference Award, the 2022 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, the 2022 Inaugural Making Our Futures Brighter Award, and the 2020 Library Journal Mover and Shaker Award. She has also earned fellowships from Facing History and Fund for Teachers.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University, a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Denver, and an educational specialist degree in leadership for educational organizations from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Janet Damon, Maestra del Año de Colorado 2025, nombrada finalista para el premio Nacional de Educadores del Año

DENVER -- El Consejo de Jefes Estatales de Oficinas de Educación (CCSSO, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció hoy a los finalistas para el premio Nacional de Maestro(a) del Año 2025. Una de las cuatro finalistas es Janet Damon, Maestra del Año de Colorado 2025. Damon es maestra de historia en DELTA High School, en las Escuelas Públicas de Denver, y ha sido educadora por más de 25 años.

Rebecca McClellan, presidenta de la Junta Estatal de Educación de Colorado, comentó: “Janet Damon representa lo mejor de los educadores de Colorado, y estamos encantados de que sea finalista para el premio Nacional de Maestro(a) del Año. Su pasión por empoderar a los estudiantes y promover la equidad es inspiradora, y estamos muy orgullosos de que represente a Colorado en el escenario nacional”.
