Fingerprinting for Private School, Charter School or as a Non-Licensed School District Employee

Important Note: The fingerprinting process explained here cannot be used for licensure with CDE. We are providing this information for those of you that need it. This page will cover fingerprinting for Private Schools, Charter Schools and for individuals that work for a school district in a non-licensed roll such as bus drivers, custodians, office staff, paraprofessionals and so on.

Before submitting fingerprints from any of these links, you will need a COOL account with CDE as outlined on our fingerprint page. If you do not, your results will not be available as this is an automated process that matches results from the CBI/FBI with an eLicensing account (COOL).

Getting fingerprinted for a private school

This is for those private school educators who are not required to hold licensure, but where the governing board of the nonpublic school requires a fingerprint background check pursuant to 22-1-121 C.R.S. (If your private school requires licensure, follow the steps for CDE Licensure). If you are being asked by a private school to submit for a fingerprint-based criminal history check, we will only release the results to the HR director or head of the school, the results will not be release directly to you. They will need to contact our background unit at [email protected] to inform us of your details and that you will be submitting prints and once those are received we will contact them directly.

While the resulting fingerprint results come directly to CDE, statute does not permit them to be eligible for use for licensing purposes.

Getting fingerprinted for a charter school

If you are employed in a charter school, you need to submit fingerprints pursuant to 22-30.5-110.7 C.R.S. for your employing charter school. Before beginning, you must obtain your charter school's CBI account number which begins with CONCJ----.

The fingerprint results will go directly to your charter school -- not to CDE -- and cannot be used for licensing purposes.

Some charter schools may require this in addition to any requirements needed for CDE, in which case you will get printed for both your charter school and for CDE.

Getting fingerprinted as a non-licensed employee of a public school district (bus driver, custodian, office staff, etc.)

If you are employed by a public school district in a position that does not require a CDE-issued license or authorization, fingerprints shall be submitted pursuant to 22-32-109.8 C.R.S. for your employing school district. Before beginning, you must obtain your school district's CBI account number which begins with CONCJ----. You may obtain this number from your school district's human resources department.

The fingerprint results will go directly to your school district -- not to CDE -- and cannot be used for licensing purposes. This is NOT for individuals that want to sub or teach and that are working towards licensure, this is only for positions that do not require a state license such as bus drivers, custodians, office staff, paraprofessionals and so on.
